The Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association invites high school students across the state to participate in its 2026 Short Essay Contest.
This year’s timely topic asks:
“How should the United States balance immigration enforcement with due process protections? Why should young citizens care?”
Students in grades 9-12 enrolled in public, private, parochial, charter, or home-school programs in Maryland are encouraged to share their perspectives on this important civic issue.
Essays must be between 500 and 750 words and submitted online at fbamaryland@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m. ET on April 7, 2026.
A distinguished panel of federal judges and FBA board members will review entries, evaluating for originality, writing quality, faithfulness to the theme, and clarity.
The top three essays will receive cash prizes:
First Place: $1,000
Second Place: $500
Third Place: $250
