Demystifying Federal Clerkships: Maryland Chapter Hosts UBalt Panel Discussion

The Demystifying Federal Clerkships event, held on April 16, 2025, at the University of Baltimore School of Law, provided students with valuable insight into the federal clerkship process.

Hosted by the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association in partnership with the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys and the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association, Inc., the event brought together federal judges, former clerks, and aspiring law students for an evening of learning and networking.

Panel Offers Practical Guidance on Federal Clerkship Applications

The panel discussion featured the Honorable Charles Austin and the Honorable Ajmel Quereshi, who was joined by a group of former federal law clerks. Together, they walked students through the typical pathway to securing a federal clerkship, beginning with key components of the application process. Topics included how to build strong relationships with faculty for letters of recommendation, what makes a compelling writing sample, how to tailor resumes and cover letters for different judges, and when to begin preparing.

The judges emphasized the importance of professionalism, persistence, and authenticity, offering a transparent look at what they and their colleagues seek in clerkship applicants. Former clerks shared their journeys—from law school to chambers—and discussed how their experiences shaped their legal careers. The panel encouraged students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to pursue clerkships and reassured them that federal judges are actively seeking diverse perspectives within their chambers.

Networking Reception Connects Students with Federal Judiciary

Following the panel, students were invited to a networking reception where they had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with members of the judiciary and former clerks. Conversations ranged from logistical questions about the OSCAR system to advice on overcoming self-doubt and navigating career planning.

This informal setting allowed attendees to build meaningful connections and receive personalized feedback, helping demystify the often opaque clerkship process. For many students, the event served as both an inspiration and a launchpad, clarifying what steps to take next in their legal journey.

The Maryland Chapter remains committed to fostering educational and professional development opportunities for law students throughout the state.
