Federal Law Clerk Bar Admissions: Maryland FBA Congratulates Newest Members

Federal law clerk bar admissions were front and center on June 13, 2025, as the FBA Maryland Chapter proudly sponsored a ceremony honoring new members of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

The event marked an important milestone for a cohort of federal law clerks who were formally admitted to practice before these two respected courts.

New Federal Law Clerks Join Maryland and Fourth Circuit Bars

Chief Judge George L. Russell III opened the ceremony by welcoming the applicants and their families. Clerk of Court Catherine M. Stavlas officially presented the group for admission to the District Bar. Maria Salacuse, Chapter President of the FBA Maryland Chapter, offered remarks that emphasized the importance of active participation in the federal bar community and the value of early professional engagement.

FBA Maryland Chapter Encourages Early Engagement in Legal Community

Federal Public Defender James Wyda spoke next, offering thoughtful reflections on the Rule of Law and the responsibility attorneys have to serve vulnerable and underserved communities. Wyda then moved to admit the clerks seeking admission to the Fourth Circuit Bar. The Honorable Paul V. Niemeyer, United States Circuit Judge for the Fourth Circuit, administered the oath for those joining the appellate bar.

To conclude the ceremony, Chief Judge Russell returned to administer the oath for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Following the formal proceedings, the new admittees, their families, and members of the bench and bar gathered for a reception to celebrate this meaningful achievement.
