Spotlight on José Bahamonde-González: A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the FBA Maryland Chapter recognizes José Bahamonde-González, a trailblazer in the legal field who left an indelible mark through his dedication to diversity, mentorship, and the Hispanic community. As the first Hispanic dean at a Maryland law school, he served for over two decades until his death on May 15, 2022 at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he held pivotal roles including associate dean for administrative affairs and student services, and associate dean for professional education.
Bahamonde-González was well-known for his unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion within legal education. He was a strong advocate for increasing access to legal education for black and brown applicants, emphasizing the importance of financial planning and minimizing law school debt to expand career opportunities. His efforts were recognized with the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2018 for his work mentoring Latinx law students.
Bahamonde-González’s contributions extended beyond academia. He was a member of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) since 1992, serving as vice president and chair of the Leadership/Membership Diversity Task Force. His professional excellence was further acknowledged by his alma mater, Syracuse University College of Law, which honored him with the Latin American Law Students Association Legacy Award in 2020 for his significant contributions to the community.
Affectionately known by students as Dean José, throughout his career, Bahamonde-González mentored hundreds of students, fostering a supportive environment that encouraged diversity and inclusion. He served as an advisor to the Latinx Law Student Association (LLSA) and OUTLaw student groups, and was a beloved figure at the annual Law Day events, where he provided candid advice and support to aspiring law students. His legacy continues through a scholarship established in his name at Maryland Carey Law after his passing, honoring his dedication to education and mentorship. The José Bahamonde-González Memorial Scholarship fund ensures that Dean José will continue to influence future generations of legal professionals.
