Fireside Chat with Chief Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan

  • Federal Bar Association Maryland Chapter P.O. Box 79395 Baltimore, MD 21279-0395 United States (map)

The FBA Maryland Chapter invites you to join us on Thursday, February 6, 2025, for an engaging fireside judiciary chat with Chief Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan, who was appointed to serve as Chief Magistrate Judge on September 1, 2023. The conversation will be moderated by FBA Board Member Beatrice “Bea” Thomas.

Judge Sullivan will reflect on his extensive career in federal defense work across different districts, where he helped save lives through mitigation efforts. He will discuss both the rewarding and painful aspects of that work, including the execution of his client Dustin Higgs, and how those experiences shaped his perspective on justice.

He will also share his journey to the bench, the role of mentorship in his development, and his admiration for colleagues who influenced his path. Attendees will hear Judge Sullivan’s candid advice for trial lawyers, including the importance of patience, preparation, and mentorship, as well as the value of acknowledging weaknesses in a case.

This fireside chat will provide a rare opportunity to gain insights into the career of a jurist whose professional life has been marked by fairness, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law. A networking reception will follow the discussion. Admission includes access to both the fireside chat and reception.
